Pope Shenouda III

“As the deer pants for the water brooks, So pants my soul for You, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and appear before God?”

His Life

His Holiness Pope Shenouda III was born Nazeer Gayed on August 3, 1923 into a devout Christian family in Egypt. By the age of 16, he was actively involved in the Sunday School movement, working to enhance Christian education within the Coptic Orthodox Church.

After obtaining his Bachelor of Arts degree in History from Cairo University, he pursued theological studies at the Coptic Orthodox Seminary and later joined its faculty.

On July 18, 1954, His Holiness chose the path of monasticism, following the example of St. Anthony the Great. Adopting the monastic name Fr. Antonious El-Syriani, he embraced a life of solitude in the Egyptian desert. Seeking even deeper devotion, he became a hermit, lived for six years in a cave that he carved himself.

On September 30, 1962, the late Pope Cyril VI appointed him Bishop of Christian Education and President of the Coptic Orthodox Theological Seminary. Known as His Grace Bishop Shenouda, he significantly expanded the seminary, tripling its enrollment under his leadership.

On November 14, 1971, he was consecrated as His Holiness Pope Shenouda III, the 117th Pope of Alexandria and Patriarch of the See of St. Mark. Under his charismatic and visionary leadership, the Coptic Church experienced an unprecedented revival, transforming its spiritual, educational, and organizational landscape. His contributions mark a pivotal chapter in the history of global Christianity.

Virtues & Lessons from His Life

True Knowledge and Love:

His Holiness Pope Shenouda III loved God, the Coptic Orthodox Church, and the people that comprise the blessed church. There is a profound understanding of this love throughout his teaching and preaching. To be capable of giving sound answers to theological questions and to threatening heretical situations requires great theological understanding; but this understanding presupposes a great love for the Lord Jesus Christ. This is a surrendering type of love that relinquishes all that is in the world to desire a spiritual union with the Holy Spirit; His Holiness cooperates fully with this union, and consequently this type of love.

"Look for a spiritual solution to a problem"

is the anthem in many of His Holiness' sermons and teachings. How are we taught this?
St. Anthony taught, "Tire yourself in the reading of books as it saves you from impurity."
Mar Isaac said, "Diligently read books and the lives of the saints. Because continuous study, looking in books, and reading about the manners of the fathers will improve the quality of your thoughts, and it becomes easy to do what fears God in your eyes, and difficulties are solvable."

His Holiness has authored countless books and given an infinite number of sermons aimed at helping a person prevent thoughts of sin. His Holiness' gift is not only that his teachings seek a solution to a problem, but also that His Holiness draws his audience's thoughts and attention to understanding what they hear in a Christ-like manner. It abides with us, in us, and throughout our lives.

Constant Meditation and Prayer:

Despite his numerous and diverse responsibilities, he used to spend three days a week in the monastery. In His book “The Spiritual means”, he says;

“Train yourself to extend the time you spend in the presence of God. How beautiful is the saying of David the Psalmist in Psalm 119:97, ‘Oh, how I love Your law! It is my meditation all the day.’ Ask yourself then, how much time do you spend with God? There is no doubt that you spend much time in conversation and entertainment from which you benefit nothing. It is time wasted. Dedicate more time talking with God by making it a priority in your life. Do not make this time at the end of your busy schedule but at the very start of it.
Try to practice praying in all places.

Follow what the Bible says, ‘Men always ought to pray’ (Lk 18:1), and ‘Pray without ceasing’ (1 Thess 5:17).

Practice praying while on the road so you would not be occupied by its scenery. Practice praying while with other people, especially if their talk is a stumbling block or it does not concern you. Practice praying when you enter your house and when you leave it, and also when you get to work and when you leave it. Pray also in each meeting, so God will give you grace and success.”

Love for the Holy Bible:

His Holiness also loved the Holy Bible and taught us to love it. He wrote,

“You love the Bible because it is God’s message to you. You receive it with love. It is exactly like one receiving a letter from somebody he loves. He reads it and rereads it because it contains words dear to him. As David the Prophet said about God’s Words, ‘More to be desired are they than gold … sweeter also than honey and honeycomb’ (Ps 19:10). And in the long Psalm, David writes, ‘How sweet are Your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth!’ (Ps 119:103).”

His Feast

The church celebrates the commemoration of the departure of Pope Shenouda III on March 17th every year - the 8th day of the Coptic month of Paremhote.
